On August 3, 1968, in front of 39,042 fans, a thoroughbred horse named Balustrade, ridden by jockey Eric Walsh, was the winner of the Monmouth Invitational Handicap race at Monmouth Park Racetrack in Eatontown. That race, known today as the Haskell Invitational Stakes, is today a major race for three-year-olds in between the U.S. Triple Crown series and the Breeders’ Cup, it currently offers a purse of US$1,000,000 and awards one of the most prestigious trophies in U.S. thoroughbred racing in the Haskell Invitational Trophy. The annual event honors Amory L. Haskell (1893–1966), former president and chairman of Monmouth Park Racetrack.
