On May 22, 1958, an accidental explosion of a Nike Ajax missile at Battery B Base in Middletown, N.J., detonated seven other missiles lined up in the base. Six American servicemen and four civilians died. This stone marker on Sandy Hook honors the memory of the deceased. The area pictured here within Sandy Hook is Guardian Park, named for the Nike Air Defense Missiles, which served as “guardians” of the New York / New Jersey region. In addition to the memorial pictured, the park features two actual unarmed Nike missiles, a Hercules and an early Ajax version, as well as a small howitzer, which represents the role of conventional artillery in the overall coastal defense system.
